[...] E qui, in un eccesso di spavalderia, colpii pesantemente con un bastone che avevo in mano proprio il tratto di muro dietro il quale era celato il cadavere della sposa del mio cuore.
Possa mai Iddio proteggermi e liberarmi dalla zanna dell'arcidiavolo! -non si era ancora spenta l'eco del mio colpo di bastone, che una voce rispose dall'interno della tomba!- con un lamento, dapprima smorzato e rotto, come il pianto di un bambino, salito poi rapidamente ad un lungo, intenso, continuo urlo, assolutamente inumano, bestiale -un ululato- un grido sconvolgente, per metà per metà di orrore per metà di trionfo, quale avrebbe potuto venire solo dall'inferno, unitamente alle gole dei dannati nella loro agonia e dei demoni esultanti nella dannazione.
Di quello che mi passò per la testa, sarebbe assurdo parlare.
Sentendomi svenire, mi appoggiai alla parete opposta. Per un attimo i poliziotti rimasero immobili, in preda ad una sorta di irrazionale terrore. Subito dopo una dozzina di robuste braccia presero a demolire la parete, che cadde tutta insieme. Il cadavere, in avanzato stato di decomposizione, intriso di sangue rappreso, stava eretto davanti agli occhi degli spettatori. Sulla sua testa, con la rossa bocca spalancata, con l'unico occhio di fuoco, stava l'orrenda bestia la cui astuzia mi aveva portato al delitto e la cui voce rivelatrice mi aveva consegnato al boia. Avevo murato il mostro dentro la tomba.
